Alice in Chains have released a lot of great music before and after their 1992 opus, but Dirt is the band’s immortal masterpiece. Their second album boasts Layne Staley’s most impressive vocal showings, Jerry Cantrell’s most volcanic riffs, and the band’s most locked-in performances. Staley’s pained lyrics, written in the throes of addiction and heartbreak, come to life on molten grunge-metal bangers like “Them Bones” and “Would?,” and tug at the heartstrings on power-ballads like “Rooster” and “Down in a Hole.”
